Feldale Lake

Lake News

2008 Annual news letter
Welcome to the 2008 news letter, a lot of water has entered the lake since our last communication, all due to last years exceptionally wet summer we all had to experience.

It certainly made for some difficult angling, however there were still some exceptional catches made along the way. One of the most memorable for me took place in the first match of the season, Lee Burton turned in a master class to bag over 72lb of Rudd, Roach & Crucian Carp winning the match by some considerable margin. In the world of king Carp, the best report I had was a Mirror Carp which provided a personal best at 24lb for David C. No doubt
there were many other anglers with PB’s or great days to remember.

An awful lot of hard work goes into the up keep and development of the lake & park, as Chairman I would like to take the opportunity to thank the management committee and permit holders for their continued support over the past year. Your personal time and effort provided on Saturday afternoons come rain or shine is what makes it all worthwhile, it is so rewarding seeing the lake & park in such good condition for all our visitors and permit holders to enjoy. So a big thank you to all.

Lastly a formal welcome to Maureen as our new secretary, please join me in wishing Maureen every success in her new role on the management committee.

Tight lines to all for the new season.
Andy Jackson
Chairman

Management Committe
Due to other commitments Simon & Sue Crooke have decided to stand down from their positions as Secretary and committee member after several years’ involvement. We don’t lose Simon’s support completely as he will continue to hold a position on the management committee. At this time it is appropriate that we thank Simon & Sue for their support & input into the management of Feldale Lake & park.

Taking the opportunity to introduce myself as the new Secretary my intentions are to continue the development of Feldale Lake & Park for the benefit of the local community, both anglers and non-anglers alike. The area is a wonderful place for all to enjoy the angling, wildlife and feeling of country life. Over the past years we have welcomed a few lady anglers to our ranks and I would certainly like to encourage more to participate.

Permit Prices & Sales
Great news, there will be no price increase for Permits in 2008 season. Our season Permit price works out at less than 9p per day over the angling season and no commercial fishery can offer that kind of value. Even the bait costs more.
Whether you have been a member for many years or last year was your first, you will appreciate the quality of water & angling that Feldale Lake has to offer local anglers. The lake has good stocks of most species, there are the Roach, Rudd & Crucians for the match angler and King Carp for the specimen hunter, all in tip top condition.
Season Permits will be available for purchase at the Lake on Saturday 26th & Sunday 27th April, 10am – 4pm. Also at the Coates Mayday fair on Saturday 3rd May.

Charity Donations
Our selected charities / organisations for 2007 were the British heart foundation, Special care baby unit & Coates Brownies. Through the kind generosity of all those that supported the fishing matches or took part in the fun & games at Coates Mayday fair a total sum of £375 has been awarded to these good causes, many thanks to all for your support. Our chosen charity for 2008 is going to be Papworth Heart Hospital, visitors and anglers of the lake have benefited over the years from the health care provided at the hospital and we felt it would be nice to give something back from the community.

Junior Mid-week Aggregate Matches
We will once again run a series of mid-week matches for the junior anglers. These take place on Thursday evenings commencing 19th June for six weeks, draw at 5pm and fish 5.30 to 8.30pm. All juniors are welcome to join in please come along and have some fun, whilst there is an opportunity to learn new angling skills. So that all have a fair chance of taking the spoils a handicap system based on age will be employed for the series, making for a level playing field. Each match will carry a prize pool of £6 plus medals for first, second & third places. On conclusion of the series points scored from each match will determine the winner & runner-up with trophies being awarded.
Sponsorship for the series is provided by P&L Motors (Proprietor Lee Burton).

Fishing Matches
So as to maintain the spirit of angling and the competition that anglers enjoy, not forgetting the post match discussion “what did I do wrong” we’ll continue to run the weekend matches. The matches are run with enjoyment in mind, there are no secret tactics or close shop, other anglers will provide a warm welcome, helping with advise. So regardless of what you believe your angling ability is please come along and have a go.

Feldale Lake Clothing
Move over M&S, Feldale Lake & Park is branching out into the fashion business.
We have commissioned a range of clothing for the fashion conscious angler, available in a range of sizes and colours. Limited stocks will be on show & available during sale of permits, plus orders can be taken. Items are competitively priced with just a small mark-up, all proceeds going towards the 2008 charity collection.
Polo shirts - £12, Fleece tops - £15, Caps - £9, Beanies - £7

I hope the new 2008-09 season will be a great success for all our permit holders and visitors to the lake & park. Just leaves me to thank you for your continued support and wish you all tight lines.

Heavy rain forces closure of car park
Please be advised due to unseasonal weather (heavy persistent rain) the car park has become water logged forcing a temporary closure. It has become quite dangerous to drive on & vehicle movements are causing excessive damage to its surface. We hope this closure will not last too long, we plan to reopen as soon as possible.

2007 Annual news letter
Name change
- It was felt at the AGM that Feldale Lake did not truly represent the whole area as a place to come and enjoy with friends & family. It was therefore voted that we should be known as Feldale Lake and Park.
To promote the lake & park to the community please join us at the Coates May Day fete on Saturday 5th May.

Junior Representatives - There are now two junior reps on the committee, they are Dominic Tuteckyj for the under 12's and Thomas Pearson for the over 12's. Dominic & Thomas will be seeking feedback from our junior members, please give them your support with ideas and match attendance. We wish Dominic & Thomas good luck in there new posts.

Toilet facilities - The committee is pleased to announce that after a successful trial last season we have now purchased our own toilet system. This will be open to all users of the lake & park and will be cleaned on a regular basis. Our objective is to encourage more people to use the area.

Junior mid week matches - After a very successful running of a mid week league for the juniors, a repeat series will take place in 2007. A big thank you goes to Mr Lee Burton for his donation of trophies and prizes.

Sponsors - We would also like to thank Jacko's of Whittlesey for their sponsorship in the season ticket book. If there are any other companies willing to place an ad in the book please contact the secretary.

Adult matches - Just to lay to rest some fears over the matches. We do not run a winner takes all pool. Entry is £5 of which £3 goes to pools payout and £2 to charity. Once the match starts a peg is chosen at random by a member of the public we then divide the lake into 2 or 3 sections, in each section there will be winners & runners up sharing the pool payout. So the lad in the next peg who is bagging up may well be in a different section to you and you could still run away as a section winner. Make 2007 the year you give the matches a go its fun for all, nothing too serious and provides a donation for a local charity. It also lets you meet other members over a bacon butty and cuppa afterwards.
Please see match section for dates.

Rule change - After a successful trial of allowing two rods the committee has agreed to continue with this ruling.
The two rod usage will run from the 1st September to season end. The rods must be under the anglers control at all times and please respect adjacent anglers swim.

Carp fishing by junior anglers - So as to give junior anglers over the age of 14 the opportunity to fish for the specimen carp without an adult present a permit scheme will be introduced. Anglers will need to demonstrate an understanding for fish safety and have the required tackle for large carp. Please register your interest when collecting your season ticket.

Lake water level - After some heavy rains during the winter months, it is good to see the lake back to a healthy water level. All bodes well for some really good fishing when the new season begins.

Waste disposal - An issue where we are all being asked to make a contribution in our daily life.
With the increased pressure to keep costs down and recycle waste we would make a plea for you to take waste bait packets, tins etc away and place in your home bins.
Last season there where a couple of incidents of personal  injury, the discarding of tins is a dangerous practice for both angler & wildlife. Inappropriate discarding of tins cannot be condoned, the management team appeals to all, please be sensible and respect the wonderful area which we all enjoy.

Well let's hope that the 2007 -08 season is a great success and that we have the opportunity to welcome into our fold new members both young and old.

Lastly please do join us for the matches, the chance to get in the frame with a trophy to remind you of the event.
Have a great season, tight lines to all & heres hoping for a 30lb carp in 2007.

Two rod rule - On Saturday 4th Novemeber FLMC discussed and passed a motion to allow anglers the use of two rods and reels. It was agreed this would be for a trial period only, with immediate effect until the end of the Feldale lake season on February 28th 2007.
The new rule only applies to rods and reels, it does not allow the use of two poles or a rod and pole.
The allowance is covered by the present Feldale season ticket, you will not need to obtain another ticket.

Feldale lake featured in flowersThis flower arrangement was created by Mrs Jane Mees on behalf of the lake.
It can be seen at Coates church flower festival takes place on Friday 29th, Saturday 30th September & Sunday 1st October.
If you get the chance please go to the church and see this lovely arrangement which will be on display until the school children see it on Thursday 5th October.
The theme given to us was from a text in the bible which says "the river runs by". As you can see the top of the display is made from bull rushes and this then flows down to the lower display which is a small pond with various water bourne flowers. All of the flowers used will be planted around the lake to enhance the look of the lake.
Many thanks from the committee go to Jane for designing and creating this marvellous display for us.
Simon Crooke (Secretary) 30th Sept 06
Keep net control - Feldale Lake water level is quite low and the water temperatures are warm. These are not good conditions for fish to be kept in keep nets, causing stress and possible fish deaths. Therefore FLMC would appeal to members to consider whether putting fish into a keep net is really necessary. If you do wish to use a keep net please fish from a peg which has a good depth of water for the keep net & reduce the length of time that fish are held (maybe as low as 2 hours) in the keep net. 5th Aug 06
Website draw - The free prize draw for those members who have registered for the members area of the website took place on Saturday 1st July. The lucky winner of the Preston carryall was Lewis Rogers after a member of the general public selected his allocated number. 3rd July 06
The Nature ReserveAs with all lakes there are areas that are not accessible by boats or by anglers. At Feldale we are lucky to have two such places.

The first is the area of reed beds next to peg 13 over the years the committee has allowed this area to become over grown and thick with reeds. When we cut back the reed beds in the main lake we left this area for wildlife and I am glad to say that the coot’s moorhens and ducks have made good use of it to nest. As can be seen by the proud mum of 6 ducklings that swim round the lake clearing up our unused bread.

This area has also been heavily used by the fish to spawn this year and those fishing pegs 13 and 14 would have heard the commotion going on over the past few weeks.

Then we have our designated reserve by pegs 19 and 20. Again this area is used by the wildlife of Feldale to rest and as a safe haven.

You may have noticed that this area has been dredged at the front, this is due to the fact that last year with the low water and high reed beds at the entrance the water in the reserve was getting stagnant. I have noticed on my travels round the lake this year that the second of our breeding ducks has used this area to keep her ducklings safe after losing several to various reasons.  This area is also a haven for the carp and on a hot summers day many can be seen just sunning themselves by the lily beds. If you are also lucky you will see now and again a kingfisher which comes to the lake.

Due to this area being more open we have divided it from the rest of the lake by using a rope and a sign. This affords the fish and wildlife a save haven from the noise and confusion of the lake. Especially at this time of year just after spawning we need to have somewhere for the fish to go to relax.

So please could I ask all anglers and dog walkers to keep out of these areas and in respect of the nature reserve by pegs 19 and 20 keep at least a metre from the rope to allow the wildlife somewhere on the lake to rest. By doing this we can keep our fish in excellent fighting condition and keep these areas a tranquil part of the lake.

New Chairman elected- Mr Colin Garton has decided to stand down as our chairman after a very successful 8 years in office. Colin's contribution to the lake has resulted in some outstanding improvements during this time, this valued contribution will continue as Colin will remain on the management committe. At the AGM held in March 06, attendees duly elected Mr Andrew Jackson as our new chairman for the coming season.
Management of reed beds - Last season the reed beds caused some difficulty for the junior anglers (adults also) in landing the specimen Carp. This situation was not fare to the angler or fish, therefore some cutting back of the reeds beds has taken place on the lake.
Dipping pool - Committee will be making an application for a Biffa environment grant. If successful the grant money will be spent on creation of a dipping pool, positioned adjacent to the nature reserve and peg No 20. The pool will provide a safe area for local schools and youth groups in the education of aquatic wildlife.
